Cookies, storage and related technologies
Cookies are small pieces of information stored on a device. Local storage, pixels, tags and scripts can also store information or access information already on a device. Their effect depends on their purpose, the information involved and the recipients, not simply on the name of the technology.
A session cookie can expire when a browsing session ends. Persistent storage can remain for longer. Clearing browser storage and deleting records held by a service provider are different actions. Information need not contain your name to relate to you or your device.
Shopping functions
Online shopping can require session information to keep items in a basket, maintain a requested checkout or login, support security or remember privacy choices. Technologies that are strictly necessary to provide a service you request can qualify for a consent exception. Being helpful to the business does not by itself make a technology strictly necessary.
Shopify supplies store functionality. Its Privacy Policy explains its information handling. A provider's general description is not a statement that every optional feature it offers operates on this store.
Optional tracking, personalisation and advertising
Where a technology requires consent, it must not be used for that purpose until a valid choice has been obtained. Advertising and cross-site tracking cannot be treated as necessary merely because they support sales. Accepting sales terms or continuing to browse is not, by itself, valid consent for every optional purpose.
A choice about email marketing is distinct from a choice about device storage. Unsubscribing from emails does not necessarily remove browser cookies, and clearing browser cookies does not necessarily unsubscribe an email address.
Statistical and appearance exceptions
UK rules provide narrowly defined exceptions for certain statistical uses aimed at improving a service and for certain appearance or functionality preferences. These are not blanket exemptions for all analytics or personalisation. Where an exception requires clear information and a simple, free way to object, those conditions must be met. Advertising, individual profiling and unrelated reuse cannot be covered simply by calling a tool statistical.
Any processing of personal information also needs an appropriate data-protection basis. A cookie-law exception does not remove the separate requirements of data-protection law.
Managing choices and browser information
Use any privacy controls presented when a choice is requested. You may withdraw consent for future consent-based processing and object where an applicable exception provides that choice. A choice saved for one browser or device does not necessarily apply on another.
Browser privacy settings can show and delete stored information or block future storage. Blocking all cookies can affect a shopping basket or sign-in as well as optional tracking. Private browsing and clearing storage may remove a saved preference, so you may need to make the choice again.
